WHY THIS MATTERS
- Clenching often reflects airway compensation
- TMJ pain frequently stems from deeper structural imbalance
- Stabilizing the airway supports jaw healing
Relieve pain by restoring harmony between airway, jaw, and muscles.

Many patients with TMJ pain are unknowingly clenching or grinding their teeth in an attempt to maintain an open airway during sleep. This compensation places excessive strain on the jaw joints and surrounding muscles.
Assessment of jaw mobility, bite alignment, muscle function, and airway contributors to clenching
Guided by the Aviara Method™, care in every division begins with a structured evaluation designed to identify the root causes of dysfunction rather than simply treating symptoms.
Before their visit, patients complete a comprehensive Aviara Health Questionnaire, which explores breathing patterns, sleep quality, jaw symptoms, lifestyle habits, emotional wellbeing, and other health indicators that influence airway function and overall wellness.
This questionnaire is carefully reviewed with the patient and used to guide the Aviara Health Assessment. The assessment follows the same framework as the questionnaire, allowing us to align the symptoms patients report with the structural and functional findings we observe clinically.
This systematic process is a key part of what makes the Aviara Method™ unique. By connecting patient-reported experiences with objective clinical findings, we are able to uncover patterns that might otherwise go unnoticed and develop a more precise and personalized treatment strategy.
The insights gathered through this process guide the creation of your individualized BioArchitectural Blueprint™, which integrates airway health, structural balance, lifestyle optimization, and emotional wellbeing to restore long-term health and stability.

4- BioArchitectural Blueprint™ Creation
5- Integrated Treatment Plan Phase
6- Long-Term Stabilization & Maintenance
Every patient begins with a comprehensive Aviara Health Assessment, guided by the information gathered from the Aviara Health Questionnaire.
During this evaluation we assess:
• airway health and breathing patterns
• tongue posture and oral function
• jaw development, alignment, and range of motion
• craniofacial structure and bite stability
• cranio-cervical posture and musculoskeletal balance
• sleep quality and breathing habits
• lifestyle factors affecting inflammation and healing
• emotional and nervous system regulation
Because airway function influences jaw development, posture, sleep quality, and nervous system balance, identifying these relationships allows us to address the underlying causes of many chronic health concerns.
Once the comprehensive insights are gathered from the Aviara Health Questionnaire and Aviara Health Assessment by the patient navigator, the patient will be evaluated by a division specific provider based on the patient’s primary concern.
When needed, advanced diagnostics may include:
• 3D CBCT imaging
• digital scans & images
• posture and breathing analysis
• sleep screening or testing
• functional laboratory testing
Based on the patient’s questionnaire, assessment and evaluation(s), we develop a personalized BioArchitectural Blueprint™ integrating airway health, structural alignment, lifestyle optimization, and emotional wellbeing.
Treatment is delivered through an interdisciplinary approach that may integrate therapies from multiple Aviara divisions.
Once foundational health and function have been restored, our focus shifts to long-term stability and continued optimization. This phase is designed to maintain results, support ongoing adaptation, and prevent regression as the body continues to evolve. Because true health is dynamic, this phase ensures that improvements are not only achieved, but sustained for the long term.

Breathing Technique, Los Alamitos, California
When TMJ first appears, some of the earliest warning signs include jaw popping and clicking when opening your jaw and pain or tenderness in the jaw or around the ears by the jaw joint. Recurring headaches, earaches, and migraines are also quite common
In some cases, TMJ can heal by itself with enough time for your injured jaw joints and muscles to rest and recuperate. Jaw stretches and massaging the area can also help. However, patients with more complex TMJ causes than strained jaw muscles may need professional treatment.
Yes. Since TMJ affects your bite, it changes the way the teeth come together and causes the jaw joints and muscles to overcompensate and become stressed. In the short term, this can cause facial swelling from inflammation. However, over time, TMJ disorder can cause your face to lose its symmetry as its shape gradually changes. In some cases, TMJ issues can extend further and reach the neck and back.
Our bodies are made of a delicate set of interconnected symptoms, and an imbalance in just one can have rippling effects that can be felt throughout. Problems with the jaw joint can cause the jaw muscles to overwork themselves. Strain, soreness, and pain can spread to the face, neck, shoulders, and back. TMJ can also cause breathing problems, putting unwanted stress on the lungs. This can affect the amount of oxygen the brain receives, creating its own troubles over time.
Depending on the severity, TMJ can certainly be treated without oral surgery. Some cases of TMJ can go away with time. Jaw exercises for strengthening, relaxing, and stretching the muscles can often help speed the process along. Others may require a mouth guard for TMJ to act as a splint to create some room between the jaws that prevents jaw clenching and teeth grinding at night. Our office prefers to use the Preventive Oral Device for a customized fit for our patients’ unique smiles.
Over time, TMJ can ruin your overall quality of life. In addition to frequent headaches and migraines, neck and shoulder pain, and chronic tooth grinding, patients with long-term TMJ can develop tinnitus and hearing loss. TMJ can often also lead to sleep-disordered breathing problems, like snoring and sleep apnea, as the airways are obstructed during the night.
